Do ham radios really slow wi‑fi?

Your reader’s letter (April 8) claimed the neighbour’s ham radio aerial affects his wi-fi. This is highly unlikely. The Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) suggests that neighbours work together: the operator keeps a record of when he is transmitting, the reader of when he is having wi-fi problems. This will identify whether it is the transmitter at fault or (as is more common) the modem. The reader can refer the case to Ofcom (interference.report@ofcom.org.uk).

A common reason for wi-fi to deteriorate over time is congestion caused by increased use in nearby homes. This is more likely to be the culprit than amateur radio signals.
